The Poisoners Handbook is a book we read in class during the first semester. We read this book jigsaw style, which is when every person reads a chapter of the book. When they are experts on their chapter that person then explains what that part was about to the rest of the group. Everyone takes turns sharing out what they learned. At the end we have the knowledge of reading the story without spending hours or days reading the whole book.
This book expained deaths due to poisons, toxins, and chemical weapons. I read the chapter on Carbon Monoxide 2, which is a gas that is less dense than air at 1.15 kg/m³, while air is 1.225 kg/m3 . Nobody can see it so it is normally found after its too late. There is no way for you to smell it, see it, taste it, the only way you can tell its there is by a sensor. Therefore people die because they are unaware that it is there. People now know to have sensors and get their house checked regularly.
We had an EOD Technician come in to our class to give us a lecture on chemical weapons and the science behind them. He showed us pictures and gave examples of side effects chemicals can have like blister agents, nerve agents, and choking agents. Throughout the years the science behind chemical weapons has advanced which has saved many people.
