Before we started the actual Model United Nations project, we learned about World War I and World War II. I really struggled during the preparation for this. I stayed in at lunch many times and joined in on a socratic seminars to make sure I grasped the concept. I am able to name the causes of imperialism PRIMES, which is: political, religious, ideological, military, economy and social and how that contributes to the wars. I learned that the assassination of the Arch Duke was a key component to the start of the war and when Austria-Hungary declared war on Serbia all countries got involved.
The League of Nations was created after World War I to make sure a war never broke out again. Many people relied on the league to bring stability to the world but that wasn't successful since World War II started in 1939. The United Nations was created on October 24, 1945 to develop friendly relations among nations based on respect for the principle of equal rights and self-determination of peoples, and to take other appropriate measures to strengthen universal peace. Today, the UN has a total of 193 nations involved to keep world peace.
For the project I was assigned to Pakistan. From that moment I became a representative of that country. I did hours of research finding out about all aspects of Pakistan. The biggest surprising fact that I found was that Pakistan is the 6th most populous country. We did a few workshops learning this like correct terminology for the conference, words like: signatories, caucus, chair, decorum, delegate, resolution etc. I have a very cool experience with this project. I didn't think it would be as exciting as it was. It was really fun to feel like a real delegate.
Click here to read my position paper that was sent to my chair. It has many different facts on Pakistan, national actions, international actions and one recommendation to our conference topic; overpopulation.
