The last project of my junior year consisted of a sci-fi short story and lots of research. With their own wild imaginations, each student decided on a science fiction topic and wrote a short story of their choice in 15 days. Within this time, our team, Run DMC read many famous Sci-fi stories to cultivate ideas for our own stories and discuss how others are written. A few short stories that we read are Flowers for Algeron, Mars is Heaven and Marionettes, Inc. As always, we did many critiques and revisions to make our stories even better.

Big Idea Graphic Organizer: This graphic organizer was very helpful in getting my thoughts sorted out. It helped me determine my characters and each of their roles as well as the beginning, middle and end of my story. Click here to view it.
World Building Graphic Organizer: The "world" in my story was all over the place until I filled out this graphic organizer. After writing my thoughts down and drawing out the image I had in my head it helped me move forward to write the body of the story. To see my World Building graphic organizer click here.
Research Doc: The purpose of this assignment was to learn about the science behind our story. We did hardcore research on the science in our story and learned more about it. Click here to look through my short story research
Logical Leaps Graphic Organizer: When writing science fiction stories, there has to be some fiction in it, thats why it is called science FICTION. In our class, we called it the logical leap. In this assignment, we had to figure out what fiction we were going to put into our story. If you are interested in exploring my Logical Leap graphic organizer click here
First Draft: Even with all of these graphic organizers my story was still all over the place. I switched my idea almost everyday and my format changed along with it. Click here to see what some of my first ideas looked like.
Final Draft: It took me awhile to be happy with the way my story was going. I worked hard in a short amount of time to create something I was proud of. To see my final Sci-Fi short story called Switched click here.
Reflection: Going into this writing project I have to say I wasn't too thrilled. I had just worked really hard on another piece of writing for the Book of Us and by that point I was pretty much done with writing for the school year. Although I had a very unmotivated attitude, once I picked myself up and started thinking of different sci-fi ideas I could expand on, I got excited. I enjoyed listening to other people's ideas and creating the stories with our insane imaginations. From the beginning, I knew what I wanted to write about but didn't know how to get my thoughts down on the paper. I really struggled being happy with the way my story was going. I changed the flow of it about 5 times until I finally finished my first draft. My thoughts were still all over the place but I finally got to a point in the story that made sense. The next time I write I want to be able to critique myself and come up with many new ideas. As I did this time, I have to do some research before I start writing to generate new ideas and make my writing the best it can be. In the future, I want to work on being able to pour all of my thoughts out onto the paper instead of driving myself crazy with it all jumbled up in my mind.
